YARMOUTH - A bright red bench, located in front of a dory at the Cape Forchu Lighthouse, is a gift from the Yarmouth Garden Club.

Members unveiled the bench Aug. 2 in celebration of the club’s 25th anniversary.

The club has maintained an annual membership of about 80 over that time and not just from Yarmouth.

“We have members from Pubnico and Woods Harbour to Saulnierville,” said club president Pauline Rodgerson.

The garden club has been involved with the Cape Forchu Lighthouse for many years, with members designing its gardens and contributing plants as well as installing ice plants in the many gardens on the property.

The club plants and maintains gardens at the Brown Street parking lot and part of Hawthorn Street in Yarmouth. It contributes to the local food and fuel bank, and has given to the Tim Hortons Camp for Children in the past.

The club takes on a special project each year to mark gardening week in Nova Scotia. In 2015, members planted a tree in Frost Park after a big storm toppled some of the stately trees there.

The club is a member of the Nova Scotia Association of Garden Clubs and hosted the Year 2000 convention, with close to 200 gardeners from across the province attending.

An annual bus trip is arranged for Yarmouth Garden Club members to tour gardens and visit garden centres in other parts of the province. Flower shows and teas are held every two years.

The garden club meets the second Saturday of the month from September to June at NSCC Burridge Campus from 1 to 3 p.m. During the summer months free, self-guided tours are organized for gardens in the region. This year, close to two-dozen properties were on the itinerary.

After the bench unveiling, the 25th-anniversary celebrations continued at Donna and Milford Lloy’s cottage nearby.
