Jean Bernard d’Entremont, the Branch 66 president, recalls that when they learned Veterans Place in Yarmouth could use a new television, it didn’t take long for branch members to offer to get them one.
“About 15 seconds,” d’Entremont said, referring to the meeting where the decision was made. “There was a motion on the floor and, bang, it passed, just like that.”
During an early-April visit to Veterans Place, d’Entremont said he views the legion’s gift as a way of giving back to the community in appreciation for how the community responded to last year’s Chase the Ace, a hugely popular fundraising initiative for the West Pubnico legion branch.
And the appreciation is reciprocal. Melanie Kennedy, the Veterans Place administrator, said they’re thankful for this particular donation and for everything the legion has done for them.
“We’re just grateful for the ongoing support,” she said. “We’re very, very fortunate.”
Don McCumber, the legion’s zone commander for Zone 12, which includes the West Pubnico branch, says all of the zone’s branches have been supportive of Veterans Place in one way or another.
“I’m really pleased with the support that the branches in Zone 12 give to Veterans Place,” he said while visiting the unit with d’Entremont.
McCumber cited a couple of examples.
“The Yarmouth branch will be in in April to do an Easter breakfast,” he said. “(The former) Port Maitland legion has been very generous, putting up new signs and donating money towards a new van ... They (Zone 12 legion branches) are all involved. I certainly give them praise for all they do.”
