DIGBY, NS - Get ready to get arrested for a good cause.

For the first time in 15 years, Digby's Jail and Bail fundraiser is back to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The event will be held Friday, May 5 from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. and is organized by the Canadian Cancer Society in partnership with the Digby RCMP Detachment.

On May 5, anyone in Digby can call in and have a person arrested by event volunteers for a $10 fee. The person will be brought to the “Jail,” also known as the Digby Curling Rink, and will stand before a judge who will read their “charge” and set their “bail.”

The person charged will raise their bail by calling friends, family and colleagues to donate money, and will be released once they meet their bail amount, and taken back home or to work by the same volunteers.

The Curling Rink will have food available for event volunteers and participants and will be open to the public all day.

According to the release, “two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.” The event’s goal is to raise as much money as possible for cancer research and further efforts to beat the disease “that has touched us all,” according to the release.

The event also raises money for support services and organizations such as the Sobey Cancer Support Centre, which runs centres like The Lodge that Gives.

The lodge offers accommodations to cancer patients and their families in Nova Scotia who lives beyond 50 kilometres from Halifax hospitals, and is but one of many organizations sustained entirely through donors and donations raised. An estimated 33 per cent of lodge guests are from Southwest Nova Scotia.

The “arrests” made as part of the event are to happen randomly during the day, and most often at the person’s workplace. Event organizers ask that anyone with issues or concerns regarding specific arrest times contact them at digbyjailandbail@gmail.com.
