YARMOUTH, N.S. – The annual Walk the Walk for Autism takes place Saturday, June 16 in Yarmouth.
People can still make donations by visiting: www.walkthewalkforautism.ca/ and they are welcome to turn out for the walk on Saturday.
Registration opens at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10:45 a.m. There is a one-kilometre and five km route.
The day's schedule is:
9:00 am - Registration
9:00-10:30 am - Fun Activities for Children or all ages, and fun loving adults. Entertainment by Josh Cochrane & The Yarmouth Brass Quintet
Raffle ticket and 50/50 sales and draw!
10:30 am - Opening Ceremony, Walk Starts (1km, 3 km or 6 km - see map)
11:00 am- BBQ & Cake, Activities re-open
12:00 pm- End of the event
All funds raised by the walk stay in the region to provide programs and services to the community. Many years ago a local southwest chapter of Autism Nova Scotia was formed and has held education days and activities in the region.
The South West Chapter of Autism Nova Scotia officially began with a group of dedicated parents in 2009. According to the Autism Nova Scotia chapters section of the website, since then the Chapter has grown to offer direct support to families through programs such as the Autism Arts program in partnership with the Yarmouth Art Gallery. The South West Chapter has also benefited in the past from an Inclusion Recreation Coordinator, who supported children with autism to participate in summer recreation programs. Other programs available to families in the region has included: YACRO Summer Recreation Respite Program, Autism family camp sponsorship to Camp Brigadoon, Autism Arts, Movie days and Autism Education Days.
