WEST PUBNICO - The staff and owners of Dennis Point Café & Restaurant in West Pubnico are organizing a remarkable fundraiser on Jan. 22.
All proceeds from meals sold on that day are being donated to assist families impacted by the tragedy that claimed the lives of four children in Pubnico Head in early January.
The restaurant, located opposite the Dennis Point Wharf, has long been a popular destination for local fishermen and tourists.
Manager Wanda Devine says she’s barely slept as she’s so excited about the upcoming event.
After hearing about the fire and the heartrending loss of life, she spent many hours thinking about the best way to help. A friend told her about another community that held a similar fundraiser for the IWK about 10 years ago and how well the community had supported it.
“I asked my dad (Vernon d’Eon) and he never questioned it for a minute,” said Devine.
The plan was shared with staff and many offered to volunteer their shift on that day to help out. Devine says she’s even had friends contact her to ask how they can help.
“It’s been heartwarming,” she said.
As of Wednesday, Devine and her staff were still finalizing what would be served. Because of the anticipated number of customers, a limited menu will be offered.
“We don’t want to have to do 50 different items. Our kitchen’s only so big, “ said Devine.
A good variety of popular selections will be available for those supporting the cause, she promised.
Some of the restaurant’s regular suppliers are donating some of the food for the event.
They’ll definitely be serving up hundreds of pounds of fish, says Devine.
The restaurant is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the 22nd. The menu for the day will be posted a day or two in advance of the event on the business’s Facebook page.
“We’re hoping that it’s going to be one of our busiest days of the year so we can donate all of that to them. That's our goal,” said Devine.
