Supermoon expected to draw participants

YARMOUTH COUNTY - A moonlight hike will be held at Ellenwood Park on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. If there is suitable snowfall, snowshoes or cross country skis can be worn. A limited number of snowshoes and skis are available for use free-of-charge at the park cabin.

The full moon on the 31st is a special one, says Friends of Ellenwood Park spokesperson Stephen Sollows.

“It’s called by some a super blue moon,” he said, explaining that it is called a super moon when it is very close to Earth and a blue moon when it is the second one of the month.

He added that people often go to the park to hike on the full moons and that it is especially nice in the full moons of winter with snow on the ground.

“The muted light provides adequate luminance for outside activities. It can be tricky on a cloudy night but if the sky is clear there is nothing quite like it,” he said.

Sollows says he’s even witnessed packs of people howling wildly on occasion as the full moon rises over the horizon.

“Don’t know if the claws, teeth and hair grew out but it sure sounded awesome,” he laughed.

The hike is a combined partnership with the newly formed Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Hiking Adventures (YASHA) and the Friends of Ellenwood Park.

Organizers are expecting a good turnout. For those who wish to snowshoe but need equipment, there are 14 sets available at the park cabin and some at the park entrance.

There is also a lunar eclipse in Atlantic Canada on Jan. 31, but it occurs early in the morning of that day.

Friends of Ellenwood Park has been promoting and managing off-season recreation at Ellenwood Provincial Park for close to a decade as a way to promote healthy lifestyles for the community.
