'Relay For Life is a community of people fighting back against cancer'

MIDDLETON, NS - Middleton’s Relay For Life will be entering its 16th year in 2018 and organizers are promising another event that combines help and hope in a six-hour fundraiser that over its history has already raised more than $1.5 million.

Plans are already being made for this year’s Relay For Life set for June 2 from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Middleton and District Arena where last year the packed venue boasted 14 teams, 108 participants, and a lot of determination as it raised more than $32,000.

Organizers say no one faces cancer alone and are again hoping for lots of local teams to sign up as they raise even more funds for the Canadian Cancer Society to help in its efforts to fight cancer and find a cure.
“These events bring together teams of family, friends, and colleagues to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and commit to raising funds to fight all types of cancer,” organizers said. “Relay For Life is a community of people fighting back against cancer.”

Festival-like

They describe Relay For Life as a festival-like fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a designated path, created from luminaries – lights placed inside paper containers in memory of loved ones.

Relay is six hours in length and each team taking part is asked to have at least one member on the track at all times to symbolize the ongoing fight against cancer. Nobody is idle at the event, because on and off track, there is always something to do. Those taking a break from walking can check out the entertainment and many activities, or relax.

Cancer survivors -- cancer free or living with the disease -- can register as a survivor for the Relay. They will be honoured and celebrated at a reception following your Victory Lap.

This year the Luminary ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. This is a way to honour and remember loved ones. You can purchase luminaries online, at the Credit Union in Middleton, or from teams.

Event Highlights

As always, the Middleton Relay For Life will be alive with entertainment by local bands plus a precision dance group will dazzle those in attendance. There will also be Bingo, a ticket auction, King’s Chorale Children’s Chorus, Minute-To-Win-It game, Zumba, and much more.

This year Middleton Relay For Life is being sponsored by EXIT Realty Town & Country, Middleton & District Arena and B&S DJ Services.
