The 100+ Women Who Care of Yarmouth County held their 10th meeting the night before at the Rodd Grand Hotel, where they voted to give Juniper House $10,200. That brought the total amount raised by this group to assist others to $106,500.
The other two non-profits nominated were the Yarmouth Area Community Fund and the Yarmouth County 4H.
During the March 7 meeting, Nathalie Ellis, executive director of Parents’ Place, described how the $9,300 they received is being used.
“My main goal is to have fun things that they can come to for free to relieve some of their everyday stress,” Ellis said.
“I’ve been there for 15 years and I’m finding that the facility is changing over to a crisis centre. All of these new tools will help,” she said.
Drumming, yoga and cooking workshops are some of the activities planned for families at Parents’ Place. A pantry in the building was also fully stocked.
“This money has been an amazing help to us,” said Ellis.
Lisa Newell-Bain, executive director of Juniper House, says the funds they received will be put towards additional violence prevention work in the community, and to add more resources, tools and services.
The 100+ Women Who Care of Yarmouth County inspired a men’s group in Yarmouth to launch last fall, plus the formation of a new Shelburne/Barrington women’s chapter.
The premise works as follows: Prior to each meeting, all chapter members can nominate a local, registered, and not for profit charity, but not lobby for it. The
100+ Women meet for one hour (5:30–6:30 p.m.), four times annually - the first Tuesday in March, June, September and December.
Each member brings $100 (cheque or cash) to the meeting. The group listens to pitches from three charities that have been selected in advance from the nominations through a random selection process.
Each member present at the meeting is entitled to one vote. Votes are tallied and the winner takes all.
Charitable donation receipts are issued by the winning charity for the full amount.
