YARMOUTH – As the countdown continues to the federal election, an event featuring the candidates running in the riding of West Nova will be held Monday, Sept. 28, in Yarmouth.
Hosted by the Rotary Club of Yarmouth and the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce, the lunchtime event will take place at the Rodd Grand Hotel.
“We’ve got confirmation from all the candidates that they will be attending,” said Matthew Trask, executive director of the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce.
The West Nova candidates are Arnold LeBlanc (Conservative), Colin Fraser (Liberal), Greg Foster (New Democratic Party) and Clark Walton (Green Party).
Greg Kerr of the Conservatives, who served as the West Nova MP from 2008 until this year, did not reoffer this time.
Chris Atwood, president of the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce, will serve as moderator for the Sept 28 event, which is billed as a forum rather than a debate.
The candidates will have a chance to introduce themselves, speak a little, and then there will be questions. Questions can be submitted to the chamber in advance of the event, Trask said, and there will be a chance to submit questions at the forum itself.
“They’ll be able to submit questions to Chris,” Trask said, “but we’re not going to open it up to the floor.”
Tickets for the event, which includes a luncheon, are $20 and are available from the chamber office (902-742-3074). Tickets will be initially offered to Chamber and Rotary members, then remaining will be available to the public.
The luncheon is scheduled for noon.
“I’m not sure when the actual presentations will begin, probably a quarter after or something like that,” Trask said.
On the day of the West Nova candidates forum on Sept. 28, there will be three weeks left in an 11-week federal election campaign that officially kicked off Aug. 2.
Trask says he expects a good turnout for the forum in Yarmouth. The event is sponsored by the Nova Scotia Association of Realtors, West Pubnico Pharamsave and CBDC.
