The flooding occurred around 1 a.m. on Dec. 17 due to what the Nova Scotia Health Authority said was a frozen pipe.

According to a media release issued Sunday, cleaning crews are working on every floor of building B of Yarmouth Hospital. Building B contains mental health and addictions services, diagnostic imaging, public health, physician offices, ambulatory care, cafeteria dining room, human resources, finance and other administrative areas.

As much as possible, patients with booked appointments will be contacted if the time or location of their appointment has changed.

Volunteers will be available to help direct patients as necessary. Patients coming to see Dr. Paul Cheevers on Monday will be met in the main lobby and directed accordingly.

Public access to affected areas is being restricted. People are asked to please avoid affected areas unless absolutely necessary.

Fans and drying equipment are in use for the next several days. These machines are large and noisy. The public is asked to be careful around this equipment.

The central stairwell in building B is closed and off-limits except in an emergency. Elevators must be used for access to the floors. Emergency exits are located at each end of the floor – but please note, these stairs only exit on the ground floor.

As an indirect result of the situation that caused the flood, some damage occurred to the water lines that enter the building. Please note, sections of the front parking lot, around the School of Nursing will be closed in order to dig up and perform repairs to the water line.

The emergency department remains open.

Cafeteria and kitchen is operating for patients, staff and visitors, but the dining room is closed.

The safety of patients, staff, visitors and the public remains top priority as the cleanup continues. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank everyone for their cooperation.
