YARMOUTH COUNTY - Frequent episodes of highway flooding from tidal surge and flood tides at Yarmouth Bar have Municipality of Yarmouth councillor Loren Cushing concerned about access to wharves at that location and residents on Cape Forchu.
“If a fire or something like that ever happened, emergency vehicles can’t get there because of the roads washing out,” he said.
He used the example of the Jan. 4 boat fire at Lobster Rock Wharf in Yarmouth, saying that if it a similar incident were to happen at Yarmouth Bar and the fire should spread, there could be “some very extensive damage done to that area.”
“I want to express my concern to Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal how important it is to fix that area at Yarmouth Bar, with more armour stone in our causeway to make sure first responders can get through in case of emergencies,” he said.
“If there was an emergency on Cape Forchu and vehicles couldn’t get across to respond to that… it could be a life and death situation.”
