The announcement occurred April 27 at the Louis-R-Comeau Library. West Nova MP Colin Fraser was on hand for the announcement along with university president and vice-chancellor Allister Surette.

The library was built in 1977 and needs major updates, according to Surette. The funding was matched by the university, and the total $880,000 will go towards major renovations. Updates will include new carpets, windows and technology such as investments in digital collections and a 3D printer.

“New libraries are built very differently than they used to be,” said Surette.

“They are hubs of technology now, and we’ve got to keep up with the times.”

Fraser presented the funding on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Mélanie Joy.

“Canada has two official languages, both of which deserve celebration. L'Université Sainte-Anne is the only post-secondary French university in Nova Scotia, and this will be a continued partnership between this institution and the federal government,” said Fraser.

“The library will be well-used to attract prospective students and will also support the entire Acadian community here in Nova Scotia.”

The library building also houses the Centre Acadien, which collects and preserves information relating to Acadian history and culture in Nova Scotia.

“We’re going to create a space that both students and the public can come to,” said Surette.

“This funding will definitely help us to modernize.”

The library is one of many campus buildings that have been renovated recently. Surette said the university’s gymnasium was one of last year’s major renovations.
