The funding, which was officially presented June 4 at Beacon United Church, will be used to assist with a number of projects, including a rain garden on the Beacon Church property.

A goal of the project is to reduce the amount of rainwater runoff that enters the storm sewer system.

“Clean Foundation is thrilled to receive support from RBC for our stormwater program in Yarmouth,” said Eleanor Royle, stormwater project coordinator with the Clean Foundation. “Good stormwater management is becoming more important than ever because of the increases in precipitation, which we have already started to see with climate change.”

Royle was on hand to accept the RBC contribution from Royal Bank representatives.

“This funding,” she said, “will allow us to support local efforts such as the Beacon United Church Community Garden’s new rain garden and other programs to raise awareness about how we can all do our part to manage stormwater and protect our watersheds.”

The Clean Foundation was chosen as a funding recipient, based on its commitment to addressing water issues and protecting water in urbanized areas.

This year the RBC Blue Water Project has committed $3.2 million in grants globally to 159 organizations in nine countries who are working to improve urban water quality, enhance stormwater management and protect and restore urban waterways. Since 2007, nearly $44 million has been pledged to 740 charitable organizations worldwide.

Berton Murphy, Royal Bank branch manager in Yarmouth – who was at Beacon Church, along with a few others from the bank, for the presentation ceremony – cited the RBC Blue Water Project. To do their part for this campaign, RBC employees in Yarmouth will be working on community rain gardens at Beacon Church and behind the RBC Yarmouth branch.

“RBC has a longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability,” Murphy said. “We understand that every little bit we do today can help a lot tomorrow. We’re proud that our employees in Yarmouth and around the world are willing year after year to do their part in their communities through RBC Blue Water Day makeovers.”
