Even though he was only elected to the board last month, and officially sworn in with the other board members on Nov. 8, Drew – a former teacher and a Yarmouth County representative on the board – said he has experience that will help him with the position.

“I am a quick study, having taught for 30 years. I taught the international baccalaureate program and coordinated that program . . . implemented it at Yarmouth high,” he said. “I’m accustomed to working with different large organizations and I think that I can bring to this board an open-mindness as chair, and encourage open discussion, respectful discussion.”

He noted through his prior role as IB coordinator he was very accustomed to working with senior board staff and said he believes he will serve the board well as its new chair.

Three people had accepted nominations for the position of board chair. Aside from Drew they included former chair Donna Tidd of Digby County and Michael Alden Fells who is the board’s African Nova Scotia representative.

Board members vote for the board’s executive positions.

While Tidd was not re-elected to the position of chair, she was elected vice-chair in a vote between herself and board member Dolores Atwood of Yarmouth.

There was also a vote for the third member of the executive. Board members had four nominees to chose between and elected Andrea Huskilson-Townsend. The person in this position fills in when the chair and vice-chair are not available. Huskilson-Townsend has been a board member from Barrington for nine years.

During the Nov. 8 swearing-in ceremony, five new members of the board were sworn in. In addition to Drew they included Pat Nickerson of Shelburne, Sandra Fitzgerald elected in the municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle, Donna Frison-LeBlanc of Clare and Melanie Surette-Kenney from the town of Yarmouth.

In addition to Tidd, Atwood, Fells and Huskilson-Townsend the other returning members of the board are Faye Haley of Digby County and Janice Francis who is the board’s Mi’kmaq representative.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Judge Michelle Christenson.
