Jesse Kemp shot these photos of the Northern Lights over the Bay of Fundy on Sept. 12. Two solar flares Sept. 8 and 9 hit the planet overnight Sept. 11 and lasting through Sept. 13. The flares, or coronal mass ejections, are essentially magnetic clouds and can affect cellular phone reception, radio transmissions, GPS signals and, in extreme examples, the electricity grid. A less offensive affect of a solar flare is the possibility of witnessing a display of the aurora borealis, or northern lights.
