Cape Breton Regional Police couldn’t offer any comment on the accident, which occurred between the George Street and Grand Lake Road exits some time after 5 p.m.

The section was closed to traffic until shortly after midnight as part of the investigation, and according to a regional police media release there was no risk to public safety.

“Right now we’re not commenting on anything,” Staff Sgt. Reg Hutchings said from the scene Thursday night.

The Serious Incident Response Team is an independent body that investigates all serious cases involving police in Nova Scotia, even if there is no allegation of wrongdoing.
