YARMOUTH - A car fire that occurred on April 6 caused a temporary closure of the Haley Road while firefighters extinguished the blaze and a grassfire resulting from the incident.
Alex DesChamp was driving the car and his girlfriend Jolene Muise was following in another.
They had left home early for a service appointment at 2 p.m. at a local dealership. An earlier version of this story referred to a recall on the vehicle however a representative from the local dealership says there was no open recall on that year and model.
Muise saw DesChamp pull over on the Haley Road near C&C Flooring with smoke coming out of the back of the car.
“He came up to my window and said ‘you need to call 911, it’s on fire.’”
DesChamp says the power steering warning came up “like it always did” and then he lost all power steering.
“My feet started getting really hot and I had no brakes so I put it in neutral and pulled to the side.
“The whole inside was catching on fire.”
The RCMP set up a detour after their arrival and Yarmouth firefighters extinguished the car fire in addition to a small grassfire on Yarmouth airport property that resulted from the vehicle blaze.
Neither DesChamp nor Muise appeared injured.
