YARMOUTH, N.S. – A trip to Emerald City turned out to be another in a long-line of successful hospital galas put on by the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation with this year’s event raising $56,042.

Proceeds from the April 28 event are being directed towards the cost of a designated ultrasound for the diagnostic imaging department at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, which serves the tri-county area of Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth. The total cost of the unit is $185,000.

“It was a lovely evening hosting 395 guests at the 14th annual Yarmouth Hospital Foundation Spring Gala,” said gala chair Linda Deveau.

“With Dorothy greeting guests at the coat check, a walk down the yellow brick road and then the entrance into the Emerald City, the theme of Oz caught your eye and imagination at every turn,” she said. “The committee put their heart and soul into so many little touches, which overall had the desired effect of the ‘Wow’ factor."

Deveau said many guests told the committee it was among their favourite gala themes to date.

Given the transformation that took place inside the Mariners Centre where the gala was held, it was hard to believe that just five days earlier MHL playoff hockey had taken place here. The Mariners Centre is undergoing another transformation this week as the venue plays host to the Yarmouth Spring Living Show May 4-6.

Broadcaster and former Yarmouth resident Bruce Rainnie served as the evening’s emcee. The band Merimac provided the musical entertainment.

In addition to tickets sold during for the gala, numerous fundraising also took place during the evening, such as raffle sales and auctions.

Numerous sponsors also support the event. This year’s presenting sponsor was the law firm of Pink Starr Barro.

Heading into this year’s event (and since the 2005 gala) in excess of $512,000 has been raised by the annual event in support of community health care to aid in the purchase of hospital equipment.
