FALMOUTH, N.S. – The RCMP has confirmed human remains were found in a home on Sangster’s Bridge Road in Falmouth following a structure fire that started around midnight on Feb. 5.

Cpl. Dal Hutchinson, the media relations officer with the RCMP, said an autopsy will be done soon to determine the individual’s identity and the cause of death.

Hutchinson said in a press release that RCMP officers were first on scene and attempted to enter the house, but were pushed back by flames and smoke.

By morning, the building showed many signs of fire damage, broken windows and charred siding, although the structure remained upright.

Police tape surrounded the outline of the building, as police and members of the fire marshal’s office remained at the scene.

Hantsport deputy fire chief Rob Merchant said fire crews arrived at the scene at approximately midnight on Feb. 5 and remained on scene until 6 a.m., with some firefighters returning to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Merchant said the Hantsport, Brooklyn and Windsor fire departments were involved with the fire, either on scene or through mutual aid.

“Our crews worked very well together,” Merchant said. “I just want to thank all of the members of the fire service.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
