The 2017 graduating class at YCMHS will include the last students I taught and worked with during my time as a teacher there. After a great deal of soul searching, I resigned my position with TCRSB in April to be with my family in Pictou County. It is Jadon Robinson's beautiful smile in the story I was reading that triggers memories, again, of all the precious students I had the great privilege to teach and know.
I am sending this letter, in part, to acknowledge The Vanguard, in particular Tina Comeau, for their endless support of my many causes, groups and activities throughout the years. The Vanguard is the voice of the people and has always been an accurate representation of the diverse culture of this area. I, along with many other readers, read Tina's story of her son Jacob going fishing with more than a few tears dropping on my keyboard. This story is truly a Yarmouth story.
Jacob was only one of hundreds of amazing students I had the great blessing to teach at YCMHS and YJH. I learned far more from each of them than they ever learned from me. All the students are a part of my spirit forever.
I especially want to acknowledge the brave and hardworking students of No Glory Productions and Global Leaders. The work I did with these two groups changed me as a person...forever. I strive every day to be as honourable as the students who were part of these groups. I firmly believe the work done by NG and GL has made the world a better place. As a teacher, I can ask for nothing more than this from my students.
As well, I will always be thankful for many fine parents and certain members of the TCRSB/YCMHS family who truly understood, supported and believed in my teaching philosophy, world-view, projects and sense of humour. You made me feel like I wasn't going to work every day. I got to do what I loved. What a privilege!
I was always a "come from away" in Yarmouth. However, I know I was always respected by my students. They are the future of the little town that touches the sea and where the highway ends with flashing lights (a little scary the first time you arrive in Y-Town).
There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of one or more of you and wonder what you are doing today.
