Mazda's 2013 CX-5 crossover sport utility vehicle was originally introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011 as a replacement for the long-serving Mazda Tribute. Available starting in February 2012, the CX-5 exhibits Mazda's "Kodo - Soul of Motion" design theme and SkyActiv powertrain technologies. It is available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending on trim levels and options.

The base GX trim starts at a suggested price of $22,995, and features a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive as standard. Also standard is such safety equipment as dynamic stability control, hill hold assist, tire pressure monitoring system, plus anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. The CX-5 also features dual front airbags, front seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. A 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are available options for the GX trim, and for those wanting the value of the base trim but with a few of the most popular convenience features added, the GX can be complemented with a Convenience Package that adds privacy glass, a Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System with Audio Profile, HD radio, a 5.8-inch colour display screen and 17-inch alloy wheels.

In $27,895 mid-level GS guise, the CX-5 features everything available on the GX with the 6-speed automatic transmission and Convenience Package, plus fog lights, a power moonroof, a rearview camera and a Blind Spot Monitoring System. Like the GX, the GS comes standard with front-wheel drive but can be outfitted with optional all-wheel-drive.

The top-spec GT trim level starts at $32,495 and comes standard with all-wheel-drive, all the GS equipment, plus additional standard features including a nine-speaker Bose audio system, intelligent key system and 19-inch alloy wheels. GT-trimmed CX-5s can also be outfitted with a Technology Package that adds Bi-Xenon headlights, an adaptive front lighting system, auto headlamp levelling, Sirius satellite radio and a TomTom-based navigation system.

No matter which trim level is specified, all 2013 CX-5's come equipped with Mazda's SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre engine which produces 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with front-wheel-drive and the manual transmission, the 2013 CX-5 is rated to deliver 7.8 L/100 km during city driving and 5.7 L/100 km on the highway. Front-wheel-drive models with the automatic are rated at 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.1 L/100 km on the highway. All-wheel-drive models feature the automatic transmission as standard equipment and are estimated to deliver a fuel economy rating of 8.0 L/100 km and 6.4 L/100 km respectively in city and highway motoring.

Mazda's 2013 CX-5 crossover sport utility is available in Canada this month and enters a large and competitive compact sport utility segment, contending with well-established competitors such as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and Kia Sportage.
