Be wary of telephone scams say RCMP.

On Wednesday, Feb. 27, Shelburne RCMP responded to multiple fraud complaints.

Investigators have determined they are part of a telephone scam affecting people across Canada. In this particular scam, a male calls and identifies himself as Michael Bell, who goes on to claim he is from Publishers Clearing House and he is calling to say the person has won $2.5 million in sweepstakes.

Bell then advises in order to claim the prize money, the person will have to provide personal information to confirm identity (social insurance number, name, date of birth, address and home phone number). The other option Bell will offer is for the person to wire him a sum of money, usually in the $250 range, to an address in the United States.

Those who have been contacted by the person identifying himself as Michael Bell say he is extremely persistent and will not take no as an answer. People are advised simply to hang up.

The RCMP reminds the public that personal information should never be given out over the phone. If you suspect that something is not quite right, hang up immediately and either contact your local police department or the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at either 1-888-495-8501 or info@antifraudcentre.ca.

At noon Mr. Washington with 1 (914)-230-4401 called me and told me that I had been picked by the Publishers Clearing House and had just won $7.5 million dollars and a 2013 black Mercides and $50,000, cash. All I had to do was purchase aGreendotMoney Pac card with a scratch off back from Wallmart or CVS and call them as soon as I return home with the card. I called the local police dept who informed me that calls made out of the country leaves the police with NOTHING to do to protect us. The call was from Cleveland or so the men said. The other man was called Mr. John Marshal & his phone number was 1 (876) 483-9508.

Don't ever get fooled by this sweepstakes scam! I've received a call like that and I'd like to add a warning that these scammers can be very tricky with their calls. They knew how to build rapport and make the victim believe their lies. Had I not read about this scam at http://www.callercenter.com before, I might have fallen for the scheme. I'd hate the idea of losing my money to the scammers.
