A man described as “someone everyone in the community can count on” has been appointed the parade marshal for the 2013 Seafest parade on Saturday, July 27.

Reverend Bill Newell is the founding president of the Yarmouth Food Bank Society and Community Fuel Fund, volunteer on-call chaplain for the Yarmouth Regional Hospital and RCMP, and padre to the Yarmouth County fire departments.

His dedication has been acknowledged in the form of many awards, including the Diamond Jubilee Medal for Community Service, The Province of Nova Scotia 25 Years Fire Service Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for Community Service, and the Government of Canada 30 Years Exemplary Service Fire Department Ribbon with Star.

Martha Cassidy submitted one of several nominations the Seafest committee received for Newell.

“When people are sad, angry, lonely or in mourning, Bill will be with them regardless of their religious background or lack of one. He personifies the best of all people,” she wrote.

She described how Newell assisted a ship full of Polish sailors after their arrest, providing them with food packages, Christmas gifts and phone access to their families.

Another nominator described Newell as the “go-to man for spiritual support for many people during times of need.”

This year’s parade takes place an hour earlier than previous years, at 3 p.m. A parking ban will be in effect along the parade route (from Argyle Street to the Yarmouth Mall) from 1 to 4 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to put in a float, and with the theme "Flavours By The Sea,” participants are encouraged to get creative. Awards include: Best Presentation of Color, Most Creative Theme Entry, Best Decorated Pulling Vehicle, Most Comical Entry, Community Spirit Award, and the Mayor's Award for Most Spectacular Entry.

To register for this and all other Seafest events, visit or drop by the Seafest Office located at 368 Main St.

I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honour. Originally from Yarmouth, I left there in 1957, went back to the area from 1991 to 2002, and now once more live "away". But I have known about Rev Newell for decades, and have had the priveledge of attending as he conducted many funerals, sometimes for people who were not in his particular 'flock'. His care for the bereaved in these situations, as well as his many other humanitarian activities, have left no doubt in my mind that he is one in a million. Someone to be looked up to and respected by all. Congratulations Rev Newell, you deserve this, and much more.
