Bantam AA Baseball Atlantics held in Yarmouth; Shelburne Reds win championship

Published on September 12, 2014

Bantam AA Baseball Atlantics were being hosted in Yarmouth over the Sept. 12-14 weekend. On the final day of the tournament it was the Shelburne Reds (Team Nova Scotia) capturing the Atlantic championship title with a win over New Brunswick.

Shelburne had placed second to the Yarmouth Gateways at provincials over the Labour Day Weekend. Because Yarmouth was hosting Atlantics, Shelburne advanced to Atlantics as well.

Their championship win was the third game of the Reds' day on Sunday, with little breaks between games.

Shelburne's Andy Bradley was named tournament MVP.

The top pitcher of the tournament Alex Doucet of Team New Brunswick. The top hitter of the tournament Jonathan Russell of Team New Brunswick.

Here are some highlights from the weekend.

GAME 1: Tournament opener: Nova Scotia (Shelburne Reds) 5 – Yarmouth (host, provincial champs) 4

Was a close game between the two teams in which sacrifice bunts in the seventh inning turned out to be the story of the game. After coming back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game 3-3 in the 6th, Yarmouth got the go ahead run in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice bunt but Nova Scotia (Shelburne Reds) tied the game on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh when Yarmouth made the play at third base instead of home plate. The Reds went on to win the game 5-4.
