But that wasn’t the case, with the Shamrocks playing only 21 of their 28 regular season games - their final seven all postponed due to rain.
The first postponement was in Noel Road on Aug. 6, when the second game of a twin-bill had to be postponed and that was followed up by postponements of doubleheaders with the Sherose Island Schooners Aug. 13 then four more games at home.
In the meantime, the Windsor Knights, who pulled off two impressive low scoring wins in Shelburne County, where the weather was much better, downing the Sherose Island Schooners 2-1 and 1-0 to secure second place in the league standings, leaving the Schooners in fourth place, one point behind third place Hantsport.
Knights Head Coach Jason Hanes said he was impressed with the two games against the Schooners.
“We had Alex Sabean pitch and win the opener by going the distance and then Veteran Dave Swindall throw a complete second game win,” Hanes said.
The Knights scored their winning run in the 2-1 opener in the sixth inning when Tristan Horner scored from third base on a suicide squeeze.
Noel Road, who finished in first place with a 20-5 record for 65 points, had their two games postponed against the Pictou County Royals due to a Nova Scotia Baseball Provincial Championship Tournament.
The Kennetcook Braves also had their final two games of the season postponed in Pictou against the Albions.
Weather Woes
NSIBL President Barry Anderson said it was terrible to see the rain play such havoc with the league schedule in August after going through late May, June and July with hardly any postponements.
The Intermediate Baseball League Championship Tournament in Noel Road Aug. 26 – 27 gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday morning between Noel Road and Sherose Island, followed by some major awards.
This year will be the first presentation of the Anthony Miller Memorial Award, which is presented to a league player who exemplifies passion for the sport, gives 100 per cent, shows opponents total respect as well as respect to everyone involved in the game.
Anthony Miller was a former Noel Road Blue Jays player who died from cancer.
Later on the Hantsport Shamrocks get back on the field to play the Windsor Knights.
When asked about the upcoming game, Hanes said the team has a couple of options for pitchers, including five-game winner Paul Humphreys, Austin Sabean or Adam Ferguson.
“We will have to be very careful and somehow prevent Shamrock Kyle Johnson from hurting us offensively as he hit .500 throughout the season,” Hanes added.
The losers of the first two games will play in the first elimination game and the winners of the opening two games will play in the final gamthe day.
