Annual curling cashspiel draws top-notch competitors to Windsor


WINDSOR, N.S. — With $11,000 in prize money up for grabs, previous world, national and provincial curling champions are in Windsor for the Spitfire Arms Curling Cashspiel.

The competition runs Nov. 25-27 at the Windsor Curling Club.

The competition drew a total of 24 teams and 96 curlers consisting of 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams.

Play began at 3 p.m. Nov. 25, followed by two additional draws at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.  Action picked up Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and will continue until 11 p.m.

Playoffs begin Nov. 27, with the quarter-finals slated for 8:30 a.m.  The semi-finals will be held at 11:30 a.m., followed by the men’s and women’s championship games at 2:30 p.m.  

The Windsor Curling Club was represented by three teams. From the women’s side, the rinks of Nancy McConnery and Mary Mattatal iced teams, and from the men’s side, Doug MacKenzie’s rink competed.

Top curling champions that are in Windsor on the weekend include Colleen Jones, Mary Jane Arsenault, Alan O’Leary, Jill Brothers, Colleen Pinkney and Brent MacDougall.

 

Upcoming qualifier

The Windsor Curling Club will host an open provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts qualifier the weekend of Dec. 9-11.

There are two draws scheduled for Dec. 9, beginning at 2:30 p.m. There will be three more draws Dec. 10, starting at 9:30 a.m. The competition will wrap up Dec. 11 with two final draws starting at 8:30 a.m.
