Bantam AA Mariners advance to provincials

The Yarmouth Bantam AA Subway Mariners have advanced to provincials, which will be held March 21-24 in Amherst.

The Mariners advanced to provincials following a record of three wins and two ties at their Bantam AA Mainland League tournament, which was held Feb. 28 to March 3 in Liverpool. The Mariners finished first in their five-team division and played the Truro Bearcats in the semi-final, winning the game 5-2 to advance to provincials.

The Mariners finished their 10-team league season in second place with a record of 21 wins, five losses and 1 tie.

The following is a recap of the league tournament games:

Game 1: Yarmouth 4 – West Hants 1

Goals: Brandon Sullivan (2), Jaden Pothier and Carman Shaw.

Assists: Brandon Sullivan, Jaden Pothier, Cory Newell, Brett Mercier, Regis Dugas and Dominic Surette.

In net was Taran Atwood.


Game 2: Yarmouth 6 – Western Valley 2

Goals: Brandon Sullivan (3), Brad Jones (2) and Tanner Messenger.

Assists: Carman Shaw (2), Jared Barkhouse (2), Brandon Sullivan, Brad Jones, Jaden Pothier, Jacob Surette, Matt Hines, Cole Jacquard, Brett Mercier and Derek d’Eon.

Cameron d’Entremont was in net.


Game 3: Yarmouth 1 – Acadia 1

Goal: Regis Dugas

Assists: Jaden Pothier and Brett Mercier

Taran Atwood was in net.

Game note: The Mariners killed off a six-minute Acadia five-on-three powerplay advantage during the game.


Game 4: Yarmouth 1 – Antigonish 1

Goal: Cory Newell

Assists: Cole Jacquard and Dominic Surette

Cameron d’Entremont was in net.


Final game: Yarmouth 5 – Truro 2

Goals: Brandon Sullivan (2) Jacob Surette, Matt Hines and Brett Mercier.

Assists: Brad Jones (2), Jacob Surette, Derek d’Eont, Carman Shaw and Jared Barkhouse.

Taran Atwood was in net.

Also advancing to provincials from the Bantam AA Mainland League are the South Shore Ice Sharks, who had finished the league season in first place, meaning this end of the province will be well represented at bantam AA provincials. South Shore had five wins at the league tournament.

Meanwhile, four members of the Mariners received league awards during the tournament. Brandon Sullivan, as a forward, and Cole Jacquard, as a defence, were named to the veteran all-star team. Brett Mercier, as a forward, was named to the rookie all-star team. Brad Jones was named league rookie of the year.
