Mariners climb back into series against Bearcats

TRURO, N.S. – The Yarmouth Mariners scored early and often and hung on to defeat the Truro Bearcats on Monday in Game 3 of a Maritime Junior Hockey League playoff series.

The Mariners netted three goals in the opening 3:17, and later held off a furious third-period charge from the Bearcats for a 6-5 victory at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.

Truro leads the best-of-seven affair 2-1 heading into Game 4 on Wednesday in Yarmouth.

Mateo Short scored 44 seconds into the game and added another at 2:47, before Duncan McKie scored 30 seconds later for a 3-0 advantage.

Yarmouth led 3-1 after 20 minutes and 5-2 after two periods.

Zach Moody gave the Bearcats life with a goal at 1:20 of the third, however, Max Robitaille restored the three-goal cushion at 4:54. Kyle Tibbo, at 12:12, and Moody, at 17:17, got the Bearcats to within one, but that’s as close as they would get.

G Blackmore, making his debut with the Bearcats, and Cameron MacLeod also scored for Truro, while Jordan Messenger and Aaron Maillet had others for Yarmouth.

The Bearcats outshot the Mariners 28-22.

Game 5 in the series is Saturday in Truro at 7 p.m.
