The host team is the Yarmouth Bantam AA Jacq’s Hometown Drycleaners and Jake’s Diner Mariners, which has players on it from Yarmouth and Shelburne counties and the Clare region.
Because Hockey Nova Scotia provincials for minor hockey are only held at the AA level of bantam and midget and the AAA level of peewee, this is one of only three provincial championships being hosted by minor hockey associations in the province. Other levels of minor hockey compete in a Day of Champions.
“Having been to Yarmouth’s events in the past, I’m confident they will continue to put on a great event for all participants,” says Brian Wentzell Western Regional Director for Hockey Nova Scotia.
Indeed, the goal is to put on an event that will be more than just a hockey tournament, but a hockey experience for the players who range in age from 13 to 15 years old.
"We have a great team of volunteers organizing the event,” says Ian White, president of the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association. “Visiting players and their families will see first-hand Yarmouth's well-earned reputation for hosting events and being welcoming."
The Bantam AA Mariners are having a successful season. The team has been at the top of its nine-team league standings for the duration of the season – the majority of that time in first place. Still, head coach Paul MacDonald says with so many good teams that will be coming to the event, it will be a big challenge for his players.
“Our boys have been working very hard all season and want to capture the title on home ice,” he says.
A volunteer host committee – made up largely of parents – has begun hosting preparations. Sponsorship and ticket packages will be available for purchase in the coming weeks. The team is also fundraising for the event and will hold a Bantam AA Bucket Bonanza at the Mariners Centre all day on Saturday, Feb. 20. People will have the chance to win one or more of 16 different themed buckets. $2 will get you 3 chances to win and $5 will get you 10.
This provincial tournament will also have a good economic impact in the area, with a large number of room nights sold, in addition to what people will spend in restaurants, stores, etc.
Because teams the bantam AA Mariners compete against during its regular season come from many parts of mainland Nova Scotia, already the team has contributed to the local economy since many teams stay overnight when they come to Yarmouth to play their games.
