Debbie Francis, organizer of the 20th annual Birthplace of Hockey Tournament said the event continues to grow every year.
“There are 67 teams, I think we had 122 games over two weeks,” she sad of the March 13 to 22 tournament. “There were a few snowstorms in there, but we survived it all.”
That’s a jump in size from 2014, when 48 teams participated.
The final game on March 22 was between the West Hants Warriors and Acadia Minor Hockey, with West Hants taking gold.
“I had a team from as far away as Yarmouth and Digby, and all the way to Sydney,” she said. “We reach from one end of the province to the other.”
Francis said the volunteer-run tournament brings a boost to the economy noting that many of the hotels and motels in the region were full for the past two weeks.
“I had a coach from Yarmouth tell me today that they always look forward to participating in the Birthplace of Hockey tournament because of its success,” she said. “With Windsor being the birthplace of hockey, it gets our name out there.”
Francis said organizers might make changes to next year’s tournament so it can accommodate more teams, such as having games all week long rather than just on the weekends.
“This is for the kids, they enjoy having a place to come and play hockey,” she said.
