Chicks with Sticks female hockey tournament this weekend in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH – Aside from having a catchy name, a tournament being held in Yarmouth this weekend continues to attract female hockey teams from many parts of the province. The annual Chicks with Sticks tournament, hosted by the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association, will be held Oct. 23-25 at the Yarmouth Mariners Centre.

The Chicks with Sticks tournament is for female teams at the atom, peewee, bantam and midget levels. Since the tournament’s inception it has attracted teams from throughout the province. Last year’s tournament saw around 20 teams take part in the tournament, which was an increase over the previous year. Some years the number of teams has been higher.

This year 17 teams are taking place.

“People who are coming are excited to come, and we’re excited to have them here,” says Monica LeBlanc, one of the co-chairs and organizers of the tournament.

For many female teams, the Chicks with Sticks tournament marks the start of their hockey seasons. In addition to being at the Mariners Centre to watch the games in person, the games are also being livestreamed by the MC Media volunteer video crew of the Mariners Centre.

A new aspect to the tournament this year is a skills competition, which LeBlanc says they are very pleased to be offering. The competitions start at 6:30 on Friday evening. The order of the competitions is: 6:30 pm Peewee, 7:15 pm Atom, 7:45 pm Bantam and 8:15 pm Midget.

When the Chicks with Sticks tournament first began in Yarmouth it was unique in that there wasn’t any event of this similar large scale promoting and featuring female hockey.

The tournament is also benefitting from another hockey event that has taken place in Yarmouth. A legacy fund from the 2012 and 2013 World Junior A Challenges that were held in Yarmouth devoted $1,000 to support and help build the Chicks with Sticks event.

That legacy fund from the two junior A international hockey tournaments has also devoted $10,000, overall, towards female hockey in Yarmouth for things such as player and coaching development, equipment, coaching clinics, female recruitment and player incentives, and efforts aimed at growing the pool of local female officials.

Aside from the opportunity to showcase female hockey, the Chicks with Sticks tournament is also significant in terms of the economic impact it brings annually to Yarmouth, in terms of people spending money at restaurants, for accommodations, at stores and buying their gas to get home.

Last year the Yarmouth bantam and midget teams both won their respective championship games of the Chicks with Sticks tournament, with wins over Colchester and Valley.

Admission to the Chicks with Sticks tournament is free.
