The Digby and Clare minor hockey associations could amalgamate depending on a vote this coming Monday in Clare.

The Digby Area Minor Hockey Association is currently a division of the Western Valley Minor Hockey Association but members of the DAMHA voted at their recent annual general meeting in favour of leaving and merging with the CMHA.

Jonathan Ettinger, president of DAHMA says the move would save Digby players and parents a lot of driving and gas.

“Digby is geographically no where near the teams in Western Valley,” said Ettinger. “The closest rink if they’re playing in one of the competitive leagues is Kingston and that’s 45 to 50 minutes away, and most of it is in Berwick, that’s an hour of driving.”

Rink to rink between Digby and Clare is 30 minutes he says.

Ettinger says the move would really only affect players interested in competitive (B, A, AA, AAA) teams, who would tryout, practice and play in Digby or Clare instead of going to tryouts up the Valley.

All house, rec or 'C' hockey players will stay practice and play out of Digby just as they always have.

Digby Players would still wear the Ravens jersey with a small Acadian logo added and the Clare jerseys would add a small Ravens logo to their jerseys.

Ettinger has scheduled an information meeting about the merger for Sunday, July 20 at the Digby Curling Club at 7:30 p.m.

The CMHA is scheduled to vote on the amalgamation on Monday, July 21 at Ecole Secondaire de Clare at 7 p.m.

A clear majority of two-thirds or 67 per cent approval from the CMHA membership and board is required for the proposed merger to succeed.
