Hockey Nova Scotia Bantam AA provincials underway in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH – Seven bantam AA teams are competing in Yarmouth this week, all of them seeking to capture a provincial championship title.

Hockey Nova Scotia Bantam AA Provincials are being held at the Mariners Centre April 7-10. And the action got underway at noon on Thursday.

Only one team will emerge the provincial champion. This will be determined by the conclusion of the championship game Sunday at 2 p.m.

The provincials are being hosted by the Yarmouth Bantam AA Mariners, who are sponsored by Jacq’s Drycleaning and Jake’s Diner during the season. The team is made up of players from Yarmouth and Shelburne counties and Clare.

The other teams competing are Cape Breton County, South Shore, Glace Bay, Western Valley, Sackville and Bedford. Bantam AA players range in age from 13-15. Around 130 players are involved.

Yarmouth Mariners head coach Paul MacDonald says spectators won’t be disappointed by this level of hockey. He’s also hoping many fans turn out to support the host team.

“We have had a very successful season and should put on a good show for the local hockey fans,” MacDonald says. “I encourage people to attend as their support will definitely pump up the home team.”

The Yarmouth Mariners finished their regular season in second place among nine teams. While the team has been preparing for provincials on the ice, off the ice the host organizing committee, which is made up of team parents and community volunteers, has been working hard to make these provincials a true hockey event for the participants and spectators.

“The event will be something awesome for people to come out to as the parents, players and volunteers have put in a lot of hard work to make it successful,” MacDonald says. “I would like to thank all those who have graciously donated to make it possible to host this event.”

Businesses and individuals in Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties have been extremely generous in donating to this event.

In addition to their attendance, the public can also support the event by purchasing tickets at a Bantam AA Bucket Bonanza fundraiser that will take place at the Mariners Centre throughout the day on Friday.

This bantam AA championship is one of only three provincial Hockey Nova Scotia championship tournaments happening in the province. The other two are at the midget AA and peewee AAA levels.

Provincial champions of lower levels of minor hockey are determined at a Day of Champions.

Yarmouth’s first game is 4 p.m. on Thursday. Also during opening ceremonies on Thursday two special awards will be presented to chosen players from each team: the Jody Shelley Leadership Award and the Ryan Graves Hardest Worker Award.

These provincials are also being livestreamed by the MC Media video crew. The livestream link is livestream.com/mcentremedia/BantamAA. The semi-final and championship games will be rebroadcast provincially on Eastlink.
