The team has already won a Division 3 regional banner on the heels of capturing the Valley High School Hockey League championship.

But the last provincial title to come “their way” was won by a team from the previous Ste-Anne-du-Ruisseau high school.

“Hayden Landry, whose grandson (Xander) plays for the Sharks, was the coach of the last team to win the provincials back in the 1998-99 season (the S.A.R. Sabres),” says PEB Sharks head coach Julien Boudreau. “He said to me during our regionals, ‘That team (‘98-‘99) back then didn’t have half the talent this team (2014-2015) has.’”

Division 3 Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Provincials are being held March 27-29 in Chester. Also vying for the provincial title will be Inverness, Richmond and the host Forest Heights team.

Boudreau says it would mean a lot to the Sharks to finish their season with a provincial championship.

“For all the early morning practices, the long drives home at midnight from home games in Middleton (an arena requirement for league admittance) in six inches of snow, the games won, the tough losses and all the headaches we give each other, it would be great for this group,” Boudreau says. “The core has been together since Timbits. To finish with the one banner that PEB has never won would make it all worth it!”

The team has competed at provincials before, but the banner has eluded it.

Many of this year’s Sharks squad are Grade 12 students, making this their last year playing with the team.
