The Peewee A team won gold in the Accord division while Atom B and Bantam C took silver in the Odyssey and Accord divisions respectively at the Shearwater East Dartmouth Minor Hockey Association tournament held in the Halifax area April 2 to 5.

The Peewee A Acadians went 4-1 to clinch the gold in the Accord division.

They lost to Riverview Blues 4-3 in their opening game followed by a 6-5 win over Sackville NS Flyer in overtime, a 3-1 victory over Western Valley Spa and a 6-1 thumping of Pelham Alabama Jr. Frozen Tide to reach the championship match.

Coach Dominique Hanna said the game was tied one-all heading into the third period when the game got really tense.

“We scored in the third for the 2-1 lead but got into penalty trouble,” Hanna said. “The Hawks had a five on three advantage and we had to play more than hard to kill the two minute penalties.”

Hanna had high praise for the team as they gelled at just the right time.

“This was the first year for Clare and Digby teams to play together and the Peewees gave it their all,” Hanna said. “It was an amazing tournament.”

Zach LeBlanc scored first for the Acadians with Alexis Comeau assisting and Alain Theriault scored the go ahead goal with Jean Luc Comeau assisting.

In the Atom B division, the Acadians went 4-1 advancing to the gold medal match.

The local team defeated the Dartmouth Whalers 2-1 in their first game, won 4-3 over the Cole Harbour Wings in the second and fell to the Bedford Blues 4-3.

The Acadians defeated South Shore Ice 7-5 then won the semi-final match 3-2 over the Bedford Blues.

In the Bantam C Odyssey final the Acadians fell 2-1 to the TASA Blizzards with Jay Deveau scoring the lone Acadian goal assisted by Luc LeBlanc and Renee Blinn.

The SEDMHA Tournament had its beginnings during the hockey season of 1977-78.
