Yarmouth Mariners fall to Pictou at home, defeat Amherst in OT on the road

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Mariners split a pair of games over the weekend.

At home Friday the Mariners were first on the board with a goal by Mike Snow but Pictou was ahead 2-1 after one period and 3-1 after two. Brodie Butt scored in the third period but the Crushers added an empty netter for the 4-2 victory. Shots on net were even with Mariner Leif Hertz facing 26, and then an empty net goal, and Crushers’ goalie Daniel Vautour facing 27 shots.

The Crushers have a Yarmouth native on its team. Quinten Johnson plays defence and played his first junior A game inside the Mariners Centre Friday night after having grown up playing minor hockey here.

In Amherst on Saturday the Mariners trailed 2-1 after the first period following an unassisted goal by Mateo Short.

Jordan Messenger and Chris Goreham both scored in the second but the Mariners still trailed 5-3. Two goals by Matthew Barron in the third tied the game with Connor Peveril scoring the OT game winner. In net the Mariners’ Brendan Cregan stopped 5 of 41 shots. The Mariners had 37 shots on Ramblers goalie Julian Galloway.

The Mariners’ record stands at 13 wins and 3 losses. This week the team plays in Pictou Thursday night and has homes games on Saturday against Miramichi and Sunday against Amherst.
