Yarmouth Mariners finish out first month of MHL season with undefeated 7-0 record

YARMOUTH – September was a good month and a good start to the MHL season for the Yarmouth Mariners.

With a 5-2 win over the Dieppe Commandos at home last Friday night, the Mariners improved their record to 7-0 by not having lost a regular season game during the month.

Yarmouth is the only team of the 12 in the league to have gone undefeated in September.

Last week when the CJHL released its first edition of its weekly Top 20 junior A rankings for the 2016-17 season, the Mariners, the only MHL team to crack the list, were ranked 4th in the country.

This week they've moved up a spot to be ranked third in the country.

Here’s a breakdown of the Mariners scoring from their Sept. 30 game against Dieppe.

First period: 14:59 Ezekiel Estrada (Matt Warner, Noah McMullin), 18:54 Duncan McKie (Chris Goreham, Mateo Short). Period ended 2-0 for Mariners.

Second period: 13:36 Andrew Martell (PP, Aaron Maillet, Goreham). Period ended 3-2 for Mariners.

Third period: 2:36 Martell (McMullin, Matt Barron), 18:44 Barron (empty net.) Game ended 5-2.

In net for Yarmouth, Leif Hertz turned away 25 of 27 shots. The Mariners had 33 shots against Dieppe goalie Maxime Michaud.

The Mariners have a home game Friday, Oct. 7 against Amherst before starting their competition Sunday in the MHL Showcase when the Mariners and Ramblers meet up again on Oct. 9. On Oct. 10 Yarmouth plays South Shore. The showcase happens in Truro. Games count towards the regular league standings.
