The Yarmouth Mariners picked up two more home wins last weekend and will be looking to keep their home win streak going when they host the Amherst Ramblers this Friday.
This Oct. 20 game will mark the last home game during the team’s Pink in the Rink fundraising campaign – being held in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to raise money for the Dr. Edwin Janke Cancer Centre at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
Players have been sporting custom pink jerseys at their home games during October, which are up for auction until the end of the month. To bid on the jerseys you can text to 902-740-5343. Updated bids are posted on the Mariners Pink in the Rink Facebook page.
Last Friday the Mariners defeated the Valley Wildcats 4-3. There was no scoring in the first period. Yarmouth’s Brent Broaders (Matt Smith, Matt Barron) put the Mariners on the scoreboard 41 seconds into the second period. The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the period before Kyle Bergh (Noah McMullin, AndrewMartell) evened the score at 17:43 and the Duncan McKie (Campbell Balk) scored the go-ahead goal at 18:26.
The Wildcats knotted the score again on a goal by Matt Warner at 4:19 in the third period. The game looked destined to head into OT before a powerplay goal by Barron (McKie) with one minute and one second remaining in the game, for the 4-3 win.
Shots on net were almost a dead heat with 30 for the Mariners and 29 for the Wildcats.
Leif Hertz had the win in net for Yarmouth.
The following night the Mariners shut out the Woodstock Slammers 4-0. Scoring for the Mariners were Aaron Maillet (Matt Barron) in the first period. Brent Boarders scored twice in the second period on the power play with both goals assisted by Barron and Smith. Balk (Logan Timmons) rounded out the scoring in the third.
Thompson Phinney had the win in net, blocking 25 Woodstock shots. The Mariners had 39 shots on net.
The Mariners’ record is nine wins and two losses, which puts the team at the top of the Eastlink South Division.
