Yarmouth Midget AA Mariners girls hockey team brings home silver from first tournament

PICTOU – The City Drug Yarmouth Midget AA Mariners female hockey team brought home the silver medal from the AA/AAA Subway Cup Female Hockey Tournament held in Pictou County over the weekend.

The championship game between Yarmouth and the Halifax Hawks turned out to be a battle on the ice, with the game going to a shootout after sudden death overtime did not result in a winner. In the end, the 4-3 shootout win went to Hawks.

This was the first tournament the Yarmouth team has attended this season. This is also the first year the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association is icing a midget AA girls team.

In the first game of the tournament Yarmouth was edged out by Halifax 1-0. Game MVP for Yarmouth went to Arielle Doucet.

The second game resulted in a 1-1 tie with Antigonish. Scoring for Yarmouth was Shayna Heroux, who was also named game MVP.

 Yarmouth next defeated Pictou 4-2. Lauren Goudey was named game MVP. Scoring goals and assists for Yarmouth were Angele LeBlanc (1G, 2A), Lauren Goudey (1G), Shayna Heroux (1G), Abby legere (1G) and Laura Legere (1A).

Yarmouth won its semi-final game 1-0 to advance to the championship game. Scoring for Yarmouth was Shayna Heroux, assisted by Arielle Doucet. Goalie Lindsey Minard was named the game MVP.

Scoring in the championship game during Yarmouth’s silver medal finish were Abby Legere, Brianne Romaine and Arielle Doucet. Angele LeBlanc was named game MVP.

In net for all of Yarmouth’s games during the tournament was goalie Lindsey Minard.
