Yarmouth Vikings Cook's Cup high school hockey tournament hits the ice this week

YARMOUTH – The spotlight will be on high school hockey as the YCMHS Vikings boys hockey team hosts the annual Cook’s Cup tournament at the Mariners Centre Dec. 4-7.

This is the seventh year the tournament takes place. This year sees eight boys team competing. Aside from the host Yarmouth team, the schools taking part are Par-en-Bas from Tusket, Sir John A MacDonald from Tantallon, Prince Andrew from Dartmouth, Forest Heights from Chester, Park View from Bridgewater, Avon View from Windsor and St. Malachy of Saint John, N.B.

The tournament will also feature a four-team girls division made up Yarmouth, Par-en-Bas, Barrington and Avon View high schools.

The tournament opens Thursday night with two 6 p.m. girls games: Yarmouth vs Avon View (Arena 1) and Par-en-Bas versus Barrington (Arena 2). The boys’ portion kicks off Thursday night with a 7:30 p.m. game between Par-en-Bas and Yarmouth.

The Cook’s Cup trophy is a stainless steel milk jug that was donated to the tournament by the Cook family that ran Cook’s Dairy. The names of all of the players and coaches of the winning boys high school hockey team are engraved and displayed on the cup.

Although full daily operations at Cook’s Dairy in Chebogue ceased in October, Cook’s and its owner Agropur Dairy Cooperative are still involved with the tournament this year as the title sponsor and are providing financial support to the event, which also serves as a fundraiser for the YCMHS Vikings high school hockey program.

Varsity AAA high school hockey is amongst the highest level of competitive hockey for youth in Yarmouth County, having displaced midget rep teams in the local minor hockey.

The Cook family has been a big supporter of high school hockey throughout the years and the Vikings hockey program is thankful for the continued support.

“Cook’s Dairy has been a huge member of our community for around 85 years and it is an honour to have them as our major sponsor,” says Vikings head coach Ronnie Jacquard, who says it is nice to have a tournament named after a company and family that has given back so much to the community and supported local youth.

“The Cook family and their staff have been supporters of the sporting community for a long time. This sponsorship shows the young men and women who have the opportunity to play, or have played in the Cook’s Cup tournaments, that it is important to give back to your community,” Jacquard says.

The Vikings – who are also thankful to their other tournament supporters and sponsors and to their season team sponsors – have themselves taken up the motto of giving back to the community. One way they’re doing so is by pairing up with the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association through a mentoring program. The high school players have each been assigned to a minor hockey team and volunteer their time to help out these teams and their coaches at practices.

With the number of boys and girls teams taking part this year, the 2014 Cook’s Cup will be the largest to date, meaning there is also an economic impact to the local economy as a result of this tournament.

Last year’s winner of the Cook’s Cup was the Sir John A team, which is looking forward to coming back to Yarmouth.

“Sir John A is very excited to be heading back to the Cook's Cup. Last year was a great experience for the team, from the competition on the ice to the great hospitality at the arena and in and around town, it was a no brainer to return again,” says Sir John A coach Ian Haverstock. “We will have our hands full with some tough teams this year, but our guys look forward to the challenge and are ready to try and repeat as Cook’s Cup champs.”

All games played in Arena 1 will be livestreamed over the Internet by the Mariners Centre’s MC Media volunteer film crew. This is the link to the livestream: https://new.livestream.com/mcentremedia/CooksCup2014

Updates from the tournament will be posted to the Cook’s Cup YCMHS Vikings Facebook book and through the team’s twitter account @YarmouthVikings. A tournament website has also been set up at www.cookscup.ca.
