Bantam AA Mariners sweep two-game series with Pictou

The Yarmouth Subway Bantam AA Mariners swept a competitive two-game series with the visiting Pictou County Crushers at the Mariners Centre over the Jan. 11-12 weekend.

Saturday's contest saw the Mariners explode for three second-period goals in less than three minutes, giving them a 3-0 lead after two frames.  A less than stellar third period by the Mariners had the visiting Crushers push back with two quick tallies of their own, only to fall a bit short.  Some key saves late in the final frame by Mariners goalie Taran Atwood preserved the 3-2 win. Yarmouth goal scorers were Regis Dugas with two and Dominic Surette.  Cory Newell, Derek d’Eon, Jacques LeBlanc, and Bailey Bent each added helpers.

The second game of the weekend on Sunday morning saw the Mariners take a 1-0 victory.

The team’s coaches say a fantastic penalty kill mid second, and a relentless work ethic from start to finish, could only be matched by the solid goaltending of the Crusher's netminder Brennan McGuire.  The Crushers goalie made several outstanding saves throughout the game.  Bradley Verran posted the shutout for the Mariners with some timely saves of his own, while also assisting on the lone goal of the game by Derek d’Eon on a nice end-to-end rush.

"This was one of our more complete efforts of the season, we just didn't get rewarded on the scoreboard!" said assistant coach Wade Newell.  "Our players showed a lot of sacrifice, blocking shots and winning battles during the Crusher's second period, 5-on-3 powerplay.  A solid team effort for sure."

This pushes the Mariners record to 11 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie, for 23 points and a third place tie in the NSMHL standings.  Next on the schedule, a home and home weekend series with the South Shore Ice Sharks.
