YCMHS Vikings split weekend high school hockey games

YARMOUTH – The YCMHS Vikings lost to the Barrington Barons 6-4 on Friday, but defeated Forest Heights 3-0 on Saturday.

In the Jan. 16 game, the Barons took a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the hockey game. Yarmouth’s Cole Jacquard (Sam Boudreau, Kirby Maillet) scored around 13 minutes in to make it a 2-1 game after one period.

Early in the second period, at 2:35, the Barons pulled ahead 3-1. Yarmouth narrowed the score to 3-2 on a goal at 6:05 by Dylan LeBlanc (Brad Jones). The Barons widened their lead during the second period to 5-2. Two late period Vikings goals – one on the power play with 1:59 remaining by Steven Moore (Maguire Breton and Jacob Surette) and the other with 7.5 seconds remaining scored by Kirby Maillet (Brayden Donaldson, Liam Eyre), made it a 5-4 game after two periods.

The score stayed 5-4 until there were only 44.8 seconds left in the game. Yarmouth had pulled its goalie and the scored on the empty net for the 6-4 win. This was the second league meeting of these teams. The Vikings defeated the Barons 8-4 in October.

In their Jan. 17 game against Forest Heights, Yarmouth scored its first goal at 3:50 in the first period (Brad Jones assisted by Jacob Surette and Brayden Donaldson) and followed up with their second and third goals – scored by Kirby Maillet (Dylan LeBlanc, Jaden Muise) and Steven Moore (Cole Jacquard, Maguire Breton) in the second period at the 3:13 and 13:14 markers.

The game went off the rails with around the 2:20 remaining in the second period when Vikings player landed on the Falcons' goalie during a scrum involving several players in front of the Falcons' net. He was pushed aside by a Forest Heights player and the Falcons' goalie then hit the Vikings player, as he laid on his stomach on the ice, at least twice. Yarmouth and Forest Heights players came to the defence of their teammates and a brief melee occurred.

The Forest Heights' goalie and three Falcons players receiving a five-minute major and a game misconduct for fighting and three Yarmouth players received the same. Forest Heights played the rest of the game with 12 skaters, while the Vikings, who had only started out with 12 skaters, played the third period with just nine skaters. This was the second league game between these two teams. Earlier in the season the Vikings had defeated Forest Heights 6-5 in overtime.
