CLARE, N.S. - Cyclists certainly didn't have to worry about the heat during the Sept. 25 Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie. Approximately 850 participants tackled chilly North-Northwest winds of 30 kilometers, gusting to 45 km. Temperatures hovered around 10 degrees celsius.

"This seemed like such a great idea in July," laughed one cyclist, rubbing his hands together to keep warm before the largest group departed on the 117-kilometre Gran Fondo route. There were also the 67-km Medio and the 35-km Piccolo.

Residents along the way bundled up in blankets and winter jackets to cheer the cyclists as they whirred past. Acadian flags fluttered on lawns and cowbells rang merrily.

The weather conditions appeared to have little effect on most participants. Smiles and cheerful greetings ruled the day.

This is the second year for the event, which doubled registrations since last year. In 2015, 425 cyclists signed up. This year, 870 registered.
