The Yarmouth boys’ Mini Vikings were the silver medal winners during provincial play held in Kennetcook over the April 9-10 weekend.

The eight-team tournament saw two round-robin pools of action. Yarmouth defeated Kennetcook, St. Margarets Bay and Bedford to advance to the gold-medal round.

In their game against Bedford, the Mini Vikings had beaten ABA Celtics with just two seconds left in the game when Michael Hiscock scored a quick rebound to give the Vikings a 67-65 victory that advanced the team to the championship game.

In the final game, Yarmouth lost to Fall River by a score of 60-48, earning the team the silver medal.

The following a list of the scores from the tournament, and also the Yarmouth player who was received the sportsmanship award for that game:

•Yarmouth 55 – Kennetcook 49, sportsmanship: Hudson Grimshaw-Surette

•Yarmouth 51 – St. Margarets Bay 42, sportsmanship: Skyler Baxter

•Yarmouth 66 – Fall River 63, sportsmanship: Harmon Grimshaw-Surette

•Yarmouth 67 – Bedford 65, sportsmanship: Michael Hiscock

•Championship game: Fall River 60 – Yarmouth 48, sportsmanship: Ian Walker

As well, Hudson Grimshaw-Surette was named to the tournament all-star team.

The Yarmouth Mini-Vikings are coached by Jim Surette, Brian Lyons and Matthew Trask, who say the personal growth of the team members over the season was overwhelming. For instance, the team started out its season with a 20-point loss and came back to defeat that same team later in the season by nine points.

The season for the team had gotten underway in January. The season consisted of six away games with Shelburne, Bayview and Wolfville and a home tournament with Bayview, Shelburne and Lockeport. The team had six wins and four losses.
