The girls defeated Drumlin Heights in two sets 25-15 and 25-22 in the final, making up for an earlier loss in the Nov. 21-22 tournament.
The Division 4 Regional championships were hosted by Ecole Rose des Vents in Greenwood, with teams from Drumlin Heights, SMBA, North Queens and Forest Heights vying for the banner.
SMBA Stingrays defeated Rose-des-Vents in two sets, 25-17 and 25-20, in their first match on Friday and then won 25-11 in both sets against Forest Heights.
Drumlin Heights prevailed over the Stingrays 25-20 and 25-11 in their final match Friday, and SMBA co-captain Krysteena Clements said she and the other girls were disappointed with the loss but it taught them a lesson.
“Drumlin is a good team and we learned that we couldn’t underestimate any team we played over the weekend,” Clements said. “It had been a long day and we weren’t on our game, but we made up for it the next day.”
Saturday morning, the Stingrays easily handled North Queens, winning 25-6 and 25-17, and followed that with a convincing victory (25-14 and 25-17) over Rose des Vents to advance to the championship match.
Drumlin Heights also advanced to the final finishing first with a 4-1 record.
SMBA dominated the first set in the championship match, winning 25-15, but it was a different story in the second set.
Although SMBA maintained the lead throughout the set Drumlin fought to tie it up at 20 before the Stingrays pulled ahead for the win.
Clements said Drumlin began serving very well and caught up SMBA.
“I was getting nervous, but I knew all we had to do was to break their serve and we would get back with our game and we did,” she said.
“We came out very strong making smart moves and the crowd was really supportive. That helped a lot.”
SMBA coach Chantal Melanson said Drumlin provided strong competition and was not to be taken lightly.
“Drumlin’s strongest point is that they don’t give up and no serves fall on the court without the team really digging down for it,” Melanson said.
“Drumlin pushed themselves to the max in the final set and we had a few anxious moments when the set was tied.”
Melanson said that she and co-coach Jason Addington had faith that the Stingray team was strong enough to defeat Drumlin as they had all season.
“When you play a team with so much heart, good skills and great teamwork, you just never know what can happen, she said.
“Every team came with the intent to win the banner and although our season record was good, we knew we had to be on top of our game, every game, to defend the title.”
SMBA is hosting the Division 4 provincial championship Dec. 5 - 6.
