CLYDE RIVER, N.S. – Eighteen-year old Fall River native Shaun Margeson is the 2018 MCT Men’s Amateur champion.
He carded a five-under-par 67 in the final round of the four-day tournament that was hosted by the Nova Scotia Golf Association (NSGA) at the River Hills Golf and Country Club in Clyde River from July 5 to 8.
It was the best round posted during the championship tournament and more than enough to clinch top spot from River Hills’ contenders Aaron Nickerson and Jody Swim. Margeson finished the tournament with a +3 four-day total of 291.
“I hit 16 greens today and that gave me lots of looks at birdies. It was actually a stress-free round, as I was hitting the ball really straight all week. Hitting it straight at River Hills is what you have to do to win here,” said Margeson in a statement on the NSGA website. A member of the Oakfield Golf Club, Margeson carded five birdies and 13 pars to win by 11 strokes over Nickerson, who was five over par in the final round (77) to finish the week with a four-day total of 302.
Swim, who had the lead after the second round and was tied with Margeson for the lead heading into the final round, posted a seven-over-par 79 to finished third and one stroke behind Nickerson (303).
Margeson, who is a two-time junior champion, will lead the Nova Scotia team that is heading to the Canadian Amateur Aug. 6-9 at the Duncan Meadows Golf Resort and Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Duncan and Qualicum, B.C. Aaron Nickerson and Sean Stuart, who finished fourth (304 four-day total) will round out the team. Mark Pothier, Ken-Wo, is the alternate.
This is the second consecutive year that River Hills has hosted a provincial championship tournament. “It was wonderful week,” said Karla Wilms, tournament organizer. “We had a great display of talent. River Hills was well represented from the players to the course superintendent who had the course in great shape. The clubhouse was lively all week. The NSGA was very happy with the way it went,” she said, adding a “big thank you to all the volunteers and staff who made it possible for us to be able to host an event of that calibre. It was exceptional. I couldn’t be more pleased.”
Last year River Hills hosted the NSGA women’s and senior women’s championship.
