Clare downs junior Mariners 2-0 to reach regionals

It took just a bad bounce Tuesday to end the playoff season for the Digby Regional junior soccer team, which lost 2-0 at home to Clare.

The bounce in question was a high, soft shot from the sidelines that landed well in front of the Mariners’ goal, but then bounded over the outstretched arms of Digby goalkeeper Ryan Ritchie.

Neither team had been able to score in the first half, but the Mariners were pressing hard in the second and seemed to have momentum on their side until the Clare goal.

The Mariners stepped up their attack, with several scoring chances, but a defensive miscue resulted in a second goal for Clare in the dying minutes

“The boys outplayed Clare but couldn't capitalize on our opportunities,” said DRHS coach Justin Oliver. “The Clare goalkeeper played a strong game. The boys had a great year and should be proud of their success.”

Digby entered the game as the number two seed, with Clare in third spot. The winner advanced to the regional playoff scheduled for today against the winner yesterday of the Bridgetown-Middleton playoff game.

Digby finished its regular season Monday with a 2-1 win in Middleton.
