The Yarmouth Scotiabank Western Riptide White Peewee A girls won the annual Chicks with Sticks tournament last weekend.
The Riptide played in the championship game versus Metro West Force Red and won 2-0. Renee Melanson and Ocean Sears each had a goal and one assist. Marissa Fevens had two assists.
Chloe Surette, who was in net for the peewee team all weekend, made a spectacular save late in the third period when she glove-saved the puck at the end of her outstretched arm, preventing the Metro team from tying the game 1-1.
During the round robin, the first game was played against Western Riptide Green, which the local team won 7-4. Carly Kini had four goals, France Boudreau two goals and Ocean Sears had one goal. Madison Cushing had two assists and Isabel Doucette had one assist.
Their next game was a 1-0 win over Metro West Force Blue. Renee Melanson scored the goal, assist by Ocean Sears.
They then played Metro West Force Red, winning 4-1. Isabelle d'Entremont had two goals, Jorden Nickerson and Marissa Fevens each had one goal. Assists were by Ocean Sears and Jorgia Malone.
ATOM CHAMPIONSHIP
In the Atom division of the tournament the Valley Wild defeated the Yarmouth Western Riptides, who were down players, 8-0. The Western Riptides team consisted of players pulled together to play in this tournament. Players came from such areas as Yarmouth, Shelburne, Clare, Digby, Weymouth and Hubbards. The girls were novice and atom age and some had not played full-ice hockey prior to this tournament. The team won all three of their round robin games.
Kiersten Kenney, who played in net in the gold medal game, was named player of the game and was also awarded the MC Media Spirit Award for the tournament. After the Riptides’ tournament goalie had to leave the tournament to play for her regular season Atom AA team, Kiersten stepped up and played in net, never having played the position of goalie before.
Nine teams overall competed in the Chicks with Sticks tournament, which was marking its 10th year. Unlike past years, there were no bantam and midget divisions.
