Yarmouth Clippers U17 team wins soccer gold in Gunn Baldursson Championship

YARMOUTH, N.S. – The U17 girls Yarmouth PetValu Clippers have brought home another Gunn Baldursson Championship medal with a golden finish to cap off their undefeated tournament.

During the 30th anniversary of the largest female soccer tournament in Atlantic Canada, which took place in the Annapolis Valley, the Yarmouth U17 girls team found themselves at the top of the U17B girls division which was made up of 12 teams.

The team went 3 and 0 in the round robin competition sporting 11 goals scored and 0 against, defeating Dartmouth United, Greenwood and Somerset by scores of 3-0, 4-0 and 4-0 respectively.  

On Sunday morning, July 23, the PetValu Clippers defeated the Kings West Soccer Club 4-0, which vaulted the team to the gold medal match later that afternoon.

In a tightly contested match, the PetValu Clippers were able to edge past the Northern Nova Falcons by a score of 1-0, with Jalisa Fells scoring the lone tally. In goal for all 5 games with zero goals against was Raine Goodwin.

During round-robin play, Keeley Cunningham, Kaya Shearer and Raine Goodwin earned player of the game honors. For a number of these girls, this was the 5th Gunn Baldursson Championship in six years.

The PetValu Clippers return to league play this Saturday, July 29, at home against West Nova Fuels from Lunenburg. The games are at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Maple Grove soccer field.
