An upcoming event at the Wedgeport school will be a chance to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment while supporting the community’s legion.
This is the sixth year for the variety show put on by the Wedgeport legion branch (branch 155) and this year’s show date is Sunday, Oct .6.
“It’s a fun afternoon,” said Rita Doucette, the show’s co-ordinator. “It’s a good cause.”
Scheduled to start at 2 p.m., the show is one of the Wedgeport legion’s best fundraisers, she said.
The afternoon will include performances (soloists and duets) and skits.
Most of the show’s participants are legion members or family members, but there are outside performers too and Doucette says they try to invite new people to keep the show fresh.
This year’s lineup, for example, includes the Kidzact “atomic” group the Ukeladies of Clare.
Clinton Saulnier, president of the Wedgeport legion, will serve as master of ceremonies.
As for the Wedgeport legion branch, its membership stood at 142 when Doucette was interviewed for this story. That’s 11 fewer than a year ago at this time, Doucette saying a number of elderly veterans died in the past year.
Doucette and others involved in the Wedgeport branch would like to see new people join. Doucette notes that legion membership is open to everyone.
“It’s going to be a busy time in the fall,” she said, “but after that – either late fall or (early) next year – I’m going to try to have another membership drive, recruitment drive, to try to get a few more to keep our numbers up.”
The Wedgeport legion is doing well and is pretty active, with various things on the go, including bingo each Monday and Chase the Ace on Thursdays. The last Saturday of each month is wing night.
Aside from the variety show on Oct. 6, the Wedgeport branch has a Halloween dance scheduled for Oct. 26 and a kitchen party Nov. 9.
And the legion hall gets used for different community functions, including wedding showers and receptions, funeral receptions and the like.
The legion is in good shape and remains an important part of the community, thanks to the efforts of legion members and the branch’s women’s auxiliary, Doucette said.
Admission to Sunday’s variety show is $8 per person or $20 per family.
